Battle Report (Custodes vs Night Lords)

Memnos shook his cowled head in despair, his aquiline features betrayed his dismay at the casual manner in which he was being dismissed. He, a scion of the most ancient house of Rhodea, one of the most ancient and revered patrician families of Terra, not to mention that he held the not insignificant rank of Lord Inquisitor in the most Holy Ordo Hereticus. He was used to all men bowing to his commands without even the slightest hesitation, even the Lords of the Astartes heeded his council and showed him the respect that was his due. The three golden clad demi gods considered him little more than a nuisance. They continued to debate their strategy for the upcoming engagement amongst themselves, “A rapid decapitation strike, tear the head from the serpent and the body will die.” intoned Shield Captain Dionysius, his free arm making a chopping movement to add weight to his statement. His other hand held his guardian spear upright, his crimson plume and cloak whipped around him in the stiff breeze, a more glorious sight one would be hard pressed to find, a shard of the glories humanity could attain anthropomorphised by the genius of Him on Terra. “Nonsense.” replied Zarathustra, his stormshield propped against his thigh and his monstrous Sentinel Blade sheathed at his side. “These are base traitors, they respect no structure of command. The VIIIth was always fractured. We must meet them in a general engagement and destroy them utterly!” The last of this gilded triumvirate, Xu Lazareus, his helm slightly bowed, free hand held to his chin affecting a pose of deep repose which fitted with his thoughtful mien, considering every point but keeping his own council. Memnos coughed “My lords, if I could but interject, much has changed in the last ten thousand years, these Astartes may share the heraldy of the VIIIth of old but that is where the similarity ends. Perhaps…”
“You think us amateurs Inquisitor? You think we have stood idle these past ten millenia?” scoffed Zarathustra, his ire at being questioned by a mortal evident in his baritone voice. “We are the Optimatoi.” added Lazareus as if that were explanation enough.
“We have unfettered access to all battle analysis data stretching back to the Great Crusade…” Dionysius’ rebuke was interupted by the painfully loud metallic below of Saggitarius’ Contemptor dreadnough vox hailer “Cease your infantile bickering, the enemy has tired of waiting for us and now make the first move! To battle Custodes!”

Here we go once again ladies and gents! Prepare for an exhilarating showdown on a brand new board also featuring a new army! A huge thanks goes out to Paul Busfield for such a brilliant paint job. Credit to the team for setting up such an enjoyable battle as per usual.
Deployment begins with the Custodes, their Land Raiders are set-up on along the roads on the far left flank and the centre. With so many buildings around to obstruct line of sight, these positions should serve best for them.
Deployment continues as the Custodes infantry set up close to the centre and beside an Imperial statue. Still can’t get over these models.
Keeping to the roads, the Night Lord Landraider sets up relatively close to the centre with some cultists close by.
The Night Lord warlord swoops down atop one of the ruins granting himself a great overview of the battlefield. From his strategic perch, the Prince will orchestrate the battle.
One of the Marines squads finds a spot up above the streets and they ready themselves with good line of sight to the enemies. That Lascannon should provide some consistent long ranged firepower.
The Night Lords attempt to get the jump on their opponent but Steven fails his seize roll. Going on to Custodes turn 1, what will these armies have in store for us today?
Turn 1 (Custodes)

The start of the first turn sees the Custodes move up the and get in to position for the turns to come. Although they are somewhat more resilient than some of the other elite armies, the general rule still stands, they can not afford to take any unnecessary casualties. Forward planning is required.

Turn 1 (Custodes)

Here we can see the Venerable Contemptor Dreadaught moving up next to the Custodian Guard. These guys tend to be a pain to get rid of, lets see how it fairs in todays battle.
