Battle Report (Adeptus Mechanicus vs Night Lords)

From the darkness they emerged, two ominous shadows, their tracks rumbling as they turn in unison, embedding the ground beneath them. A confusion of wires, moving parts, and callous skin stretched over metal forms a sick human resemblance. Emotionless, cold and lifeless. They were human once; the Adeptus Machanicus cared not from whence the corpses came, merely that they would be put to use to fight on in the Emperors name.

The machines trundled forward. With their free moveable arms, they carried a smaller, more humanoid version of themselves. A lesser being if size or firepower were a measure, but far more agile, it’s mechanical legs dangled a few feet from the ground. It’s circuitry sparked, causing it’s dead white flesh to twitch and convulse, as if its former occupant was still in control.
It’s body spilled out with liquids that dripped to the floor, pouring out of freshly burnt holes that riddled it’s torso, caused by weapons of a cruel nature. It was barely active, yet despite the grievous wounds, it felt nothing. The body this machine held host to, that it was fused with, had died long ago, along with any understanding of pain or emotion.

Belisarius Cawl watched his machines approach, carrying their wounded comrade, the ranger scout. As they drew closer, Cawl noticed the scout’s mask had been torn away to reveal the rotting flesh remains of its face, and an eight pointed star that had been carved into its forehead. The blood, if it could be called that, had already congealed, but the carving still bubbled an unnatural, viscous black liquid. Cawl’s bionic-optical lense, that had replaced his eye long ago, widened to subvert the surrounding night. Scores of data scrolled over his vision, as scribes and other unidentifiable creatures connected by tubes and wires to Cawl’s body, scurried around him translating and processing his every thought.

As the two tracked brutes came to a stop near Belisarius, they lowered their weapons in what appeared to be a sign of respect, but was no doubt an automated command protocol. Their free arms still holding up the dying Scout for Cawl’s inspection. One of the machines spoke, it’s voice was raw and guttural, as if it’s organic voice box scrapped against coarse wiring.

“Kataphron Servitor B-92, returning from Grid sector 49-AV, Located Skitarii Ranger Class C – Alpha 3629. No resistance met, No other life detected” The other Servitor had no voice box installed, instead a ream of data sheet began to pour out, where its mouth would have been. Numbers and unknown symbols ran across the parchment as one of Cawls cadre scuttled over to transcribe it. “Confirmed My Lord” the small hunched creature spoke. “This Servitor relays the same data, no sign of Alpha Ranger unit 3629”

Cawl lurched a step closer to the scout still slumped between the servitors. Cawl’s hulking frame towered over the others. An appendage, one of many, hidden under his crimson red ropes revealed itself. It struck like a coiled snake, connecting seamlessly to a small round data entry-port, located on the rangers chest plate. As Cawl accessed the dying rangers data files, he could feel them corrupting by the second, as the lifeblood left the rangers body, so too did it’s memories.

He accessed the visual-audio input protocols, to review what caused this Skitarii ranger’s grizzly end. The image picts were damaged, it jumped and skipped out of sequence, as Belisarius’s own internal processes tried to clean up the feed.

He watched the the images leap from one data file to another. The rangers moved in perfect formation, a synchronisation of flawless design. It skipped ahead, they were passing through a clearing, their night vision barely able to stave off what seemed to be an unnatural darkness. The images were distorted, but Cawl could see what appeared to be a woman, knelt down in the clearing, rocking back and forth, surrounded by a gentle whimper in the air. The images jumped, the rangers had approached the female, trying to identify her as an imperial citizen.

She turned her head, and the image froze, her mouth was wide open, in a never ending scream. Her eyes were gone, empty sockets stared back at the Skitarii Ranger, her forehead was home to the same carved, eight-pointed star the Ranger received. Without hesitation, the Skitarii’s rifle came into view and pointed at the woman’s head.

The pict images skipped forward. The Ranger unit traversed stone ruins, demonic howls began to swirl around them, their rifles were raised in anticipation. Without warning, the unit leader was launched across the ruins, his head removed from is body. Gunfire lit up the archways of the stone remains and diabolical screams of pain, hatred and laughter echoed against the walls.

They had made contact. The images jumped once more, Cawl tried to save the data but struggled. Then he saw it; a skull. Not a real skull, but painted in the clearest white, spread across the face of a helmet, face to face with the Ranger. As the mysterious figure moved away, Cawl realised the Ranger was lying on it’s back, amongst the rubble and debris. He was looking up at the top of the ruins, when a lightening strike cracked across the sky. It bathed a silhouette in temporary light, outlining a hideous visage, resembling a vicious gargoyle statue. An almost winged creature of sorts, that seemed to be a part of the lightening that enveloped it. Only the piercing glow of its red eyes stood in contrast to its dark frame. It howled and roared into the night sky, as the rain began to lash down, as if by its command.

Cawl unplugged himself from the Ranger, who was unceremoniously taken away. He starred out into the darkness from whence the servitors returned, processing what he had just witnessed. Then it came to him. His vision once again laden with numbers and symbols.

Welcome back to what will certainly be another fantastic battle between the devastating Adeptus Mechanicus (Louis), and the formidable Night Lords (Steven, painted by KB Studios). The team setup another gorgeous board where an imperial sector had been left to ruin with a road running along the centre acting as a deathzone away from any form cover.
Having just managed to get our hands on the new Chapter Approved 2017 book, we thought it would be fitting to try out some of the new missions that it’s brought along with it. Today we will be trying the Eternal War mission Scorched Earth, with six sets of barrels representing each of the objectives. This mission opens up a new method of play where the objectives are not an afterthought for the end game, but rather something that should be factored in as from turn 1. Would also be interesting to see if either player will get the opportunity to raze any of the objectives in the midst of battle.
Steven sets up his most resilient units along the road, which is effectively a no mans land. In doing so it would give him more opportunities for line of sight and also easier access to move along the battlefield. It does also mean that he is more vulnerable from oncoming fire let’s see how this pans out for the Night Lords.
The infantry on the other hand use the protection from the ruins situated alongside for they have a lot of ground to cover in order to get their enemies within their threat range.
The Adeptus Mechanicus also deploy themselves within the safety of the ruins trying their best to keep out of sight from the Night Lords long range weaponry.
On the opposite side of the no mans land, within the Adeptus Mechanicus’s deployment area, the Dunecrawlers find an area with visuals to the Night Lords vehicles, while also maintaining some cover of their own. The Tech Priest adds his support by remaining in close proximity.
Steven wins the roll off to have first turn from the +1 bonus for having finished deploying first. Louis did try to steal the initiative but failed.

Turn 1 (Night Lords)

The Night Lords are not shy from danger as they fire up their motors and begin close the gap between themselves and the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Vindicator advances as his weapons are out of range for the time being. movement up vindicator advances as nothing in range

Turn 1 (Night Lords)

The Chaos Marines focus their attention in moving towards an objective located near the central heart of the battlefield. They run at full pelt without any hesitation within the imperial compound to cover as much ground as possible.

Turn 1 (Night Lords)

Only metres ahead a loud crackling of distortion emanates for there is a rift in the warp and from it emerges a group of Chaos Obliterators.

Turn 1 (Night Lords)

The Daemon Prince briefly glances at his fellow Land Raider. While raising his arm towards it he performs his daemonic ritual, bestowing prescience upon his fellow ally.

Turn 1 (Night Lords)

The Landraider and Obliterators then unleashes all of their ranged weaponry at the Adeptus Mechanicus, targeting both the Ballistarii and Dune Crawler. Combined they were only able to remove 2 wounds from the Ballistarii and 5 from the Dune Crawler. This was due to the Adeptus Mechanicus Shroudpsalm Canticle granting cover across their whole army.

The remaining of the Night Lord’s forces had focused their attention in closing the gap between them and advancing across the battlefield. Not the most effective first turn but they remain confident that their enemies will feel the full wrath of Chaos shortly.

Turn 1 (Night Lords)

By the end of the first turn Steven was able to score 2 victory points. It is now over to Louis to see if he can capitalise on what has been a relatively safe turn.

Turn 1 (Adeptus Mechanicus)

The Sicarian Ruststalkers are not intimidated by the Night Lords presence and move themselves closer to the enemy with their weapons fully charged and radiating a dissonance of electrical static energy.
