“Move it Shas’la!”

Streams of bolter fire raked across the advancing Fire Warriors, Por’el Kishem’s leader shouted to his comrades below as he returned fire with his pulse carbine, standing defiantly at the crest of the rubble landscape. Por’el clambered over the ruins, “Yes my Shas’ui!” the adrenaline coursed through his veins as he forced out a reply to his team leader. This was his first taste of combat, his Trial By Fire. Rock and debris filled the air as enemy ordinance smashed into the rubble in an attempt dislodge Por’el pathfinder team, making it difficult to ascend the ruins. As he climed, Por’el could hear the communications being relayed back to the Ethereal “Request fire support! Multiple hostiles in sector 12!” The firestorm overhead caused distortions in the transmission as a crackled voice replied in a calm, calculated tone “Shas’ui, get marker lights on enemy positions for the fire support cadre” Por’el had yet to fire his weapon, seeking refuge beside a slab of concrete from the constant barrage of his unseen foe. His comrades were dying all around him, succumbing to the sheer weight of enemy fire, staying alive became an act of bravery unto itself. Somehow, his Shas’ui remained standing, firing into the ash and dust filled distance. “Shas’la, fire a marker light!” Por’el’s leader ordered, he nodded and steadied his footing whilst aiming the targeting device, straining to see his foe through the smoke and fire. The beam connected to the hulking frame of the enemy clad in colossal silver armour. Information flooded throughout the entire Tau command network, preliminary schematics of a Grey Knight terminator of the Adeptus Astartes flashed across Por’el’s visor. “Good work Shas’la! We’ll make a Fire Warrior of you yet!” he heard his Shas’ui say over the communicator. “Astartes terminator class, unknown imperial design” Aun’Wei communicated to all units. Hearing the Ethereal speak of the enemy gave Por’el a surge of courage, swinging his pulse carbine over the concrete slab to engage the space marines. As he pulled the trigger a missile slammed into the concrete in front of him, throwing Por’el backward and burying him under debris. Dazed and surrounded by the bodies of his comrades Por’el struggled to pull himself free, the Shas’ui scrambled to clear the rocks holding Por’el down. Facing the Tau battle lines, his vision blurred with the force of the impact. Everything began to slow, as the din of battle became muffled around him. Por’el watched as the sun gleamed across the frame of a colossal Storm Surge, it’s titanic legs anchoring down in preparation to release its devastating firepower. The Stormsurge open fired and both Fire Warriors stared as they witnessed the almighty power of the Tau war machine. Hundreds of missiles flooded the sky above, crashing downward with deadly precision. Its pulse driver cannon unleashed a rail of light that turned the battlefield a vibrant blue, Por’el watched in sheer awe at such a display of power. The Shas’ui continued to dig the young warrior out of the debris but Por’el placed his hand on his leader’s shoulder, signalling him to stop his efforts knowing they were in vain. “You passed your trail Shas’la, you’re a true Fire Warrior.” The Shas’ui said kneeling beside Por’el. Looking up into the sky, watching more Tau ships breaking into the atmosphere, Por’el nodded, knowing his time was due and his duty was done. “For the Greater Good my Shas’ui….” He slumped forward half buried in rubble. Standing upright and placing his Pulse Carbine against his chest plate, the Shas’ui looked down on Por’el’s body. “For the Greater Good my son.”

Hello all and welcome to another gripping display of tabletop warfare brought to you by SN Battle Reports. In today’s match, Nick, representing the SN Team, prepares his Grey Knights to defend the studio honour against, No Retreat veteran and studio regular, Adam and his Tau force. As always, while the opponents size each-other up, the SN Team set out a phenomenal battlefield with terrain and battle-mat from Gamemat.eu. In this clash between the warriors of the Ordo Malleus and Xenos from the Eastern Fringe, it will be interesting to see whether the new Beta rules have affected these two forces and changed their strengths and weaknesses on the board. On that note, let us get stuck into this game.
(Deployment)

Nick begins deployment by placing his beautifully painted Land Raider Crusader behind a ruined building with the aim of shielding it from some of the Tau firepower should they take the first turn; a Terminator squad is embarked within.

(Deployment)

With a thunderous bust from its engines the Storm Raven emerges on the battlefield and hovers nearby, it is also carrying a squad of Terminators.

(Deployment)

Adam deploys his Riptide Battlesuits and the Stormsurge as securely as possible within his deployment zone. He allows for some protection using the terrain but ensures he has line of sight to counter any advances from the Grey Knights. The force Commander takes up position behind the line in his Coldstar Battlesuit.

(Deployment)

Adam uses the Infiltrator rule to set up his Stealth Suits closer to Nick’s line. With their Camouflage Fields flickering, and from behind the stone wall, the Suits appear almost invisible to the Grey Knights.

Adam’s failure to seize the initiative sees the Grey Knights take first turn.
Turn 1 (Grey Knights)

Nick moves the Land Raider up the board towards his enemy and into a better firing position. The Terminator Squad disembark, taking cover behind the Raider while preparing to assault the Stealth Team.

Turn 1 (Grey Knights)

The Stormraven Gunship soars across the board and directs its payload into the nearest Riptide Battlesuit. A shower of Bolter fire rains down on the suit from above, its defences, however, proves too sturdy and only one Shield Drone is destroyed.

Turn 1 (Grey Knights)

The Land Raider unloads into a unit of Pathfinders. This time the rate of Bolter and Assault Cannon fire proves too much for the comparatively lighter armour worn by the Pathfinders and the unit is destroyed outright, securing First Blood for the Grey Knights. The tanks Multi-Melta now takes aim at the Riptide and removes another Shield Drone.

Turn 1 (Grey Knights)

Having killed two of them in the shooting phase, Nick sends his Terminators into combat with the elusive Stealth Suits. Bounding towards their enemy with heavy footsteps, the Grey Knights, both gracefully and powerfully, crash through the ruined wall, which had been previously shielding the suits, and slay two more of them with their Nemesis Halberds.

Turn 1 (Tau)

The severely weakened Stealth Suit unit breaks out of combat with the Terminators.

Turn 1 (Tau)

After reaching the Stormraven with a Markerlight, Adam spends a command point to use the Uplinked Markerlight stratagem. As the Stormraven takes a mortal wound, delivered at the beginning of the Tau’s shooting phase by means of a Destroyer missile from the Stormsurge, Nick also spends a command point to uses the Truesilver Armour stratagem to help protect the flyer from further attack.

Turn 1 (Tau)

Nicks measures prove unsuccessful however. Adam unleashes all the firepower of the Stormsurge into the flyer, beams of blue light crash into its hull followed by an array of missiles and rockets. With the aid of the Markerlights, the Stormsurge makes short work its target.
