Battle Report (Raptors vs Orks)

The clatter of brother Alenso’s boltgun on full auto almost drowned out the bestial roar of the rapidly approaching Ork horde. Almost. Spittle flew from gaping tusked maws as the xenos charged towards the scouts with their violently crude choppas held high over their heads. Alenso held his boltgun at waist height gently panning it in an arc as he emptied the twenty round magazine in seconds. To the trained eye it looked like the Raptors scouts had lost their fire discipline. Unaimed fire on full auto was looked down upon in the Astra Militarum, in some regiments it was considered a capital crime and a waste of the Emperor’s las charges. To see space marines commit such a basic error was disquieting but that the perpetrators of this rash act were Astartes of a chapter as vaunted for its clinical application of accurate fire as the Raptors was stupefying to say the least.
But there was method to their madness. As Alenso and his squad sprayed mass reactive rounds low, the green tide stopped in its tracks as it’s front rank fell forwards on knees blasted and pulped by .75 explosive bolts. The hordes inertia meant that the successive waves could do nothing to avoid their crippled and falling comrades before them and soon a chain reaction began where Orks tripped over those that came before, every greenskin that reached the ruin of the front rank added another layer to the bewildered living rampart of the scouts making. The few who managed to get through the morass of bellowing and flailing Orks were dispatched by overwatching scout snipers positioned to Alenso’s’ rear. Whilst all this was going on the scouts, their smoking boltguns now drained of ammo reached for their frag grenades unhooking them from their harnesses with the unhurried grace that was the signature of ruthless practice. As one the five scouts hurled their grenades at the tangled Orks, each grenade landing at the optimum distance from the next in line to ensure the maximum extent of damage. With a crump the grenades went off sending blackened earth, red viscera and green flesh flying in all directions. Alenso’s squad was already moving, ramming home fresh magazines as they withdrew towards the main body of the Raptors force. The Orks frustration could be felt as well as heard, a bass note of pure hatred that presaged the fate of any unfortunate that came within arm’s reach but behind that wall of sound could be heard the clanking of orky warmachines moving forward to support their now decimated infantry. This new foe was beyond Alenso and his scout brethrens means of destroying but that was always the plan. The Orks once engaged would follow the scouts into the Raptors pre-prepared killing field. The scouts that had hurt the horde so greviously were just the bait, the big guns waited, silent and hidden, just a few hundred meters behind them.

Greetings to all from around the galaxy! Today we have yet another battle report coming to you straight from the SN Studio! In today’s game, we will be seeing Aaron’s vicious Orks, painted beautifully by the talented Toby Liddiard, fighting against Steven’s Raptors; a veteran army at the SN Studio. They will be doing battle atop the Pwork Wargames “Lifeless Land” battle mat, along with some beautifully made terrain pieces that fit the theme of the board perfectly. Scattered about the battlefield are two different lots of crates and barrels.
The first of the two Gorkanauts enters the battlefield, clumsily wandering onto the front lines and looking to wreak havoc among the Raptor forces!
The Warboss on War Wolf leans forward digging his heels into the wolf and prompting it to let out a bellowing howl, creating more and more noise among the ranks of the Orks, riling them up more before the battle. Here we have an absolutely awesome conversion, an Ork Warboss atop a giant wolf, ready to charge into the battlefield alongside the rest of his forces.
Meanwhile, Raptor Scouts infiltrate up the battlefield, closing the gap between the Orks and Space Marines, allowing them to relay information back to the main force. The climb onto a crag, slowly edging their way along it until the Orks are in their sight.
Towards the back of the Raptors line, a unit of Devastators armed with Lascannons deploy. They set up their heavy weapons for the upcoming turns, where they will look to remain stationary in order to be able to take down the Orks’ biggest threats!
The Scouts armed with Sniper Rifles quietly make their way along the battlefield, looking to use the crates scattered around the battlefield as a vantage points. They effortlessly get onto one and peer down their scopes, looking for the Warlord; the optimal target for those who have perfected assassination style weaponry.

This game will be played using the Beta Rules. This means that reserves come in as from Turn 2. With both sides finally deployed, the players roll off to see who will begin the game. Aaron manages to win the roll off. Steven then attempts to steal the initiative from him, as Raptors greatly benefit from getting the first turn, given their incredible alpha strike potential.

Unfortunately for Steven, his roll comes up short, meaning that Aaron and his Orks get the first turn of the game!
Just before the Orks get their first turn, Steven brings in his units with his Stratagem Strike From the Shadows. He opts to place both the Centurion Assault Squad along with the Captain in the centre of the board!
Turn 1 (Orks)

Without hesitation, the Ork forces relentlessly begin to move up along the battlefield looking to reach the enemy lines as soon as possible to get to the fightin’. The sound of machinery clunking along the battlefield, as well as the heavy footsteps of the Orks themselves mix in with each other, creating a myriad of horrifying sounds.

Turn 1 (Orks)

After advancing up the battlefield, the Ork warboss scans the area for the closest target. Despite attempting to be stealthy, he sees the Sniper Scouts up atop of the crates raises his Power Klaw in their direction and orders the Gorkanaught to open fire at them. The Gorkanaught unleashes a volley of mixed weaponry at the Scouts, managing to kill off just 3 models despite its mass amount of firepower. The Warboss, not content with the unit still being alive decides to fire at them too, using his own weaponry. The Dakkaguns prove too much, tearing easily through the remaining two Scouts. The Orks rejoice at the slaying of a Raptors unit, but do not relish in it for long as they continue to look for the mass of the Raptor army. First blood for the Orks!

Turn 1 (Orks)

The second Gorkanaught removes 3 wounds from the closest Contemptor Dreadnought. It then also pivots, taking aim at the Centurions. However, due to the Raven Guard Chapter Tactic “Shadow Masters” the Orks do not manage to hit them, due to them receiving a -1 for firing at any Raven Guard Chapter unit that is 12″ or further away from them!

Turn 1 (Orks)

The Gorkanaut continues forging ahead towards the Raptors, charging into the Centurion Assault Squad. They aim at the large walker with their Meltaguns, firing into the hull of the monstrous hulk of metal. a total of 8 wounds are done to the Gorkanaut right off the bat! Regardless, the wounded walker lumbers its way into the combat with the Centurions.

Turn 1 (Orks)

The Captain decides not to intervene between the Gorkanaut and Centurion Squad. The Gorkanaut’s giant Klaw of Gork slams down into the Centurions, slaying one of them instantly. Immediately after, the walker swipes its Klaw to the side, slamming the other Centurion into the rock face, its body falling to the ground a now lifeless slump. The Centurion Sergeant however wastes no time, jumping into the fray, Siege Drills at the ready. He buries them deep into the makeshift armoured panels of the Gorkanaut, as it tears through it with ease. He deals a total of 9 wounds to the Gorkanaut, leaving it on just 3 wounds. A massive amount of damage dealt to it on the Orks’ first turn!

Turn 1 (Raptors)

The Contemptor Dreadnoughts begin their advance, looking to thin the ranks of the Orks. They both fire at the Grots, killing a total of 7 of them. The Devastators armed with Lascannons then look to the other Gorkanaut, firing at them and managing to shave off 4 wounds. Not as much damage as was done to the other Gorkanaut, but still a substantial amount.
