Battle Report (Death Guard vs Craftworlds)

The shriek of shuriken projectiles ripping through the miasma that enveloped their targets sounded like the screams of vengeful wraiths from beyond the veil of tears to be quickly followed by the sharp cracks of the disc-like rounds shattering against corrupted ceramite and the wet gurgle of genuine mirth from Nurgle’s chosen. The slowly advancing plague marines paid the Eldar fire as much heed as a man might shrug off a light summer rain, a mirthful chorus rising from their cancerous throats drowned out by the buzzing of the innumerable plague flies that surrounded them like a living cloud. The Death Guard advanced at a steady pace, their tread squelching underfoot as the very earth beneath them became putrid at their approach. Eldar grav vehicles made lightning passes, strafing the advancing cohorts of Nurgle with withering fire that the heretic Astartes answered with their own volleys with surprising speed. The Guardians of Iyanden, proud in their sunburst yellow armour, withdrew before their corpulent foes seeking to keep them at range or perhaps just avoiding their aura of decay. Wave Serpents arrived surrounded by flickering holofields and disgorged the true might of Iyanden. Wraith Guard moved with unhurried grace to meet their foe, the undying warriors unafraid of grandfather Nurgle’s unkind touch. Hefting reality-shattering weapons of near inconceivable potency and wraithbone blades of sublime workmanship they advanced as one in a mighty phalanx, a fine testament to the power and poise of the Eldar race. They would be the immovable object that met the Death Guard’s irresistible force.

Welcome all, back to a brand new Battle Report, packing in a good few surprises! Firstly, we have a few new units brought to us by the talented Siege Studios; another Helbrute and, a Nurgle Daemon Prince! We also have Keeran back in the Studio with his Iyanden Craftworld! Both forces will duke it out on this ruined battlefield, expertly set up by the SN Team!
There are a total of 6 objectives scattered around the table. Each objective is worth 1 Victory Point at the end of every turn. Additionally, a player may raze objectives in the enemy’s deployment, giving him D3 Victory Points but removing them from play in the process!
Keeran begins deploying his Eldar forces by placing his Wave Serpent on the battlefield. It’s a refreshing site to have Keeran’s brilliantly painted Iyanden Eldar in our studio, one which we welcome fully!
The Nurgle Daemon Prince stands surrounded by the three Helbrutes, shielding the Daemon from any oncoming fire from the Eldar. They begin to scan the battlefield with their Lascannons, setting their sites on any potential targets for the following rounds.
A unit of Plague Marines stand nearby one of the objectives. These hardy Chaos Marines look to hold the objective for as long as possible throughout the battle!
Both players roll off to see who begins the game. Steven manages to get a 5 whereas Keeran only manages a 3, meaning that Steven gets the first turn. Keeran, looking to maximize his damage before taking casualties, attempts to seize the initiative, however he does not manage to do so. Turn 1 for Steven and his Death Guard!
Just as the game begins, Keeran deploys his two units of Eldar Rangers, up atop the rusted battlefield ruins. The Eldar Rangers peer down their scopes, awaiting the perfect opportunity to strike at the enemy forces from the shadows.
Turn 1 (Death Guard)

In the distance, the Hellbrutes accompany the Nurgle Daemon Prince, as they advance forward, looking to break the ranks of the Eldar. The Plague Marines stay back and keep hold of the objectives. As they encroach upon the Eldar forces, a pungent green stench manifests itself around the Daemon Prince, forming almost a protective barrier around the individual. The Daemon Prince casts Miasma of Pestilence on himself, meaning the units attempting to hit him do so on a -1, Steven does this with the knowledge that the Rangers are able to specifically target the Daemon Prince!

Turn 1 (Death Guard)

On the order of the Daemon Prince, the three Helbrutes fire at the closest Wave Serpent. The Twin Lascannons take aim and fire towards the hull of the skimming Eldar transport. However, an awful roll by Steven sees only 4 wounds being dealt to the Wave Serpent from 6 Lascannons in total. Not a good start!

Turn 1 (Craftworlds)

Moments later, the Eldar begin their movement. The Wave Serpents glide through the air almost completely silently, only the sound of the rubble on the ground moving from the vibrations of the skimming vehicles making any audible noise. Both transports take aim at the Plague Marine squad closest to them. Between them both, they fire a large volley of Shuriken weaponry, the sharp, razor-like discs fired from the Shuriken Cannons tearing through four of the Plague Marines, as they lodge deep within their flesh, killing them in the process.

Turn 1 (Craftworlds)

Seeing the weakened unit, the Rangers turn their attention to the very same Plague Marine unit that got shot at, hoping to eliminate even more of them in the process. They fire, however, the majority of them miss their marks, with the exception of one, managing to pierce through the Plague Marines armour and through their torso, as a fifth Plague Marine slumps to the ground lifeless.

Turn 1 (Craftworlds)

With nothing else able to shoot on the table, it goes onto the Morale Phase. The Plague Marine unit fails their leadership miserably, seeing all but the Champion dying. Steven decides to reroll this by spending a Command Point, this time he is successful and passes the check!

Turn 2 (Death Guard)

Two of the Helbrutes begin to lumber forward as per the orders of their Daemon Prince, following closely behind, their heavy footsteps sending tremors into the nearby ground. Following their advance, a musky cloud of virulent plague begins to manifest further ahead on the battlefield. From it, appear the Lord of Contagion, accompanied by the Blightlord Terminators, as they step out onto the battlefield, the very ground surrounding them begins to wither where they tread.

Turn 2 (Death Guard)

Steven then opts to spend a Command Point in order to use the Fire Frenzy stratagem on the Helbrute that did not move earlier on, allowing him to fire twice. He targets the Wave Serpent once again. Keeran then spends two Command Points to use the Lightning Fast Reactions stratagem on the Wave Serpent. This gives anything hitting the unit a -1 to hit, meaning that the Helbrutes that moved would hit it at a -2 and the stationary one would hit at a -1. This causes Steven to miss most of his shots with the Lascannons, dealing only a measly 4 wounds to the transport vehicle from the total of 8 Lascannon shots!

Turn 2 (Death Guard)

The Blightlord Terminators watch, as the Lascannons fire in the direction of the Wave Serpent, with the majority of them going wide and missing. One shot hits the front of the Wave Serpent’s hull, throwing it off balance momentarily, before the skimmer stabilizes again. Noticing that it has still not fallen, the Terminators fire into the vehicle too with their array of disgusting weaponry. Steven spends another Command Point to use the Stratagem Veterans of the Long War, giving the Blightlord Terminators a +1 to wounding for the rest of the phase. They fire their weapons at the Wave Serpent, however the incredibly talented pilot of the skimmer is able to maneuver out of the way of the projectiles, emerging unscathed. Steven then charges in and makes the 9″ charge, leaving the Lord of Contagion behind. However, the round continues to go in Keeran’s favour, as Steven fails to wound the Wave Serpent yet again!
