Battle Report (Adeptus Custodes vs Iron Warriors)

Zarathustra thrust his open palm forwards in an unhurried and seemingly innocous gesture that nevertheless sent his heretic astartes opponent sprawling, his ceramite breastplate and reinforced ribcage caved in. His spear spun in his free hand as he swivelled to meet his next foe, another Iron Warrior charged at him, bolter spitting mass reactive rounds that sparked off Zarathustra’s immaculate auramite plate leaving only faint scorch marks upon its near inviolable surface. Two quick strides brought him into range before the Astartes could react, the overhead spin of his guardian spear turned gracefully into a downward slice that neatly dissected the traitor down the middle. The halves of the slain Iron Warrior fell with a wet thump, trans human vitae fountained about the macabre sight in copious amounts. Before either half had hit the ground Zarathustra had despatched two more heretics, one with a volley of mastercrafted bolt rounds straight into centre mass and the other neatly pierced through both hearts with an underhand lunge with his spear. They kept coming, applying continuous pressure upon the Adeptus Custodes in the hope that somewhere the Custodians would show a weakness that could be exploited in the same manner that their Primarch had drilled into them ten millennia past. The inferior Astartes were nothing if not predictable. They found only death at the gilded hands of the Emperor’s finest and greatest creations. Zarathustra had already accounted for twelve Astartes and he knew he could continue at this level of mild exertion continously for another 142 hours before his combat efficiency would begin to be negatively affected by fatigue. He knew with even handed certainty unclouded by pride, hatred or hubris that victory would belong to the Custodes. A cacophonous blast of noise, raw hatred rendered in sound heralded the arrival of Iron Warrior reinforcements. A colossal Leviathan dreadnought stomped forwards, ammo feeds clicking loudly as rounds were fed into its Soulburner, siege claw snapping eagerly. Zarathustra assessed his new foe and came to the conclusion that his chances of victory were slim at best. This shocked him to the core. He had never failed at anything, ever. Perfect in every thought and deed exactly as the Emperor had intented him to be. The Leviathan leveled its quad barreled storm cannon at the Custodian as he braced for the incoming storm. Two Sentinel Guards appeared as if from thin air to either side of Zarathustra, their storm shields locked together, overlapping fields of energy flickering as they took the brunt of the large calibre fusillade. That two individual Custodes from different sodalities could come to the rescue of a third was emblematic of the way they fought. Superlative individuals fighting alone or forming collectives as and when needed to overcome specific obstacles only for them to revert to their solitary roles once said obstacle was overcome. The Sentinel Guards leaned into their shields, soaking up the physical punishment as Zarathustra hunched between them, he peered over the lip of the shields to see the dreadnought bearing down on them determined to crush them under its titanic mass. At the last possible moment Zarathustra spoke a single, unhurried word in a voice that was eerily calm and level. “Now.” The Custodes broke their tight formation, the Sentinel to Zarathustra’s left spun under the Leviathans right arm, his giant Sentinel blade slicing upwards to cut out the powerfeeds linking the Soulburners arm to the chassis. The second Sentinel ducked the Leviathan’s siege claw at the last moment, his armoured form bent almost double, sparks flying as his underclaw scraped over his chest plate. Once the dreadnought had sped past him he regained his feet and rammed his sword to the hilt into the metal behemoth’s powerpack with preternatural speed.
Zarathustra himself lunged under the Leviathan’s legs as it bore down on him, his guardian spear sweeping out in a wide arc to sever it’s… left leg cleanly. The brute fell with a metallic howl of anguish and hatred. The Custodes for their part split away from each other tracing individual paths of ruin through the Iron Warriors ranks with nary a backwards glance. Other warriors might exalt in such a victory or thank providence for their survival against such a foe. The Custodes forged on without sparing the dreadnought another thought. What was extraordinary for others, even veteran Astartes, was expected and commonplace for the Emperor’s finest.

Welcome to another fun-filled, boot-stomping, name-calling, trash-talking battle report between Chris and Nick from SN! In this action packed report, we’ve got the prestigious, gold plated armour of the Custodes facing off against the siege breaking, hazard-stripe-donning Iron Warriors. Let’s get stuck into it!
Today, both armies are landing on this lava filled planet for one reason – and that is to lay claim to this long lost tome. Thought to be a relic from the Horus Heresy, both armies desire to gain access to the knowledge held within.
Rolling off to start the game, Chris rolls higher and so picks his side, forcing Nick to start placing first.
Deploying right in the centre of the board, the Land Raider containing the Shield Captains is flanked by the nearby Vexilus Praetor holding the Vexilla Magnifica.
With the Leviathan in dead centre, the rest of the Iron Warriors surround the ancient killing machine. Just at the back of the picture, the Havocs climb atop the cooling magma deposit for a better line of sight.

Rolling off for first turn, Nick manages to win thanks to the +1 bonus  from deploying first. Chris rolls to seize…

…but fails! So close, yet so far. Onto Custodes turn 1…
Turn 1 (Adeptus Custodes)

Beginning their turn, the Custodes start their slow march forward towards the heretic scum fixating their gaze on them across the battlefield. One unit picks up the pace and advances up onto the terrain.

Turn 1 (Adeptus Custodes)

The Land Raider kicks off the shooting phase, targetting the Vindicator with it’s twin lascannons. Light flashes across the planet surface and slams into the front armour of the tank, but after the blinding light dissipates, the vehicles does not look too worse for wear…only 3 wounds are inflicted. The Heavy Bolter starts spewing lead into the Havocs overlooking the rest of the Iron Warriors and the mass reactive rounds prove deadly as 4 are slain, leaving a single autocannon wielding marine standing.

Turn 1 (Heretic Astartes)

Stomping through the lava flow, the Leviathan leads the charge, moving straight forward towards the Custodes.
