Battle Report (Tyranids vs Craftworlds)

“Their coming was foretold. The Tyranids, the great devourers, they would be upon this place soon, their tendrils reaching deep into the planet’s heart and sucking, leeching, eating it from the inside. We had warned the mon’keigh, but our warnings had been met with the lasgun and the chainsword. They would not listen, blood was spilled, and now there are too few of them left to stop the onslaught.

So, the task falls to us, brave and noble warriors of Craftworld Iyanden, to stand in the beast’s path and stop them before it’s too late. This planet is not simply a dry and barren rock upon which the mon’keigh have built forges and homes, it is a sacred place of vital importance to our kin. For as long as the humans would not defile our secret shrines, we allowed them to stay. And though their assistance was promised to us by the Farseers who knew of the coming of this great menace, we must fight alone.

The beast comes now, the sky darkened with millions of descending spores. Even now I can hear their scream, not with my ears but in my mind. Our Guardians already rush to save what relics they can from our shrines. We will hold the Tyranids for as long as we can, and then we shall depart into the webway, if there are any of us left.”

Introduction

The appearance of Hive Fleet Leviathan saw what little was left of the old Cardinal World wiped from this plant’s surface. Now all that remains on Duriel is smoke, dust and the sinews of war. Yet this ravaged earth has yet to see its final battle.

Their first encounter with Hive-Fleet Kraken taught the Eldar of Iyanden to never again underestimate the power of the Great Devourer; the loss of eighty percent of their population is a blow from which they are still wreathing. So when their great enemy re-emerged from oblivion, the proud Iyanden had little option but to act. After brokering a deal with the Dark Eldar of Commorragh, Iyaden hatched their plan to destroy their most hated enemies outright. A psychic device, disguised as an ancient Imperial explosive, has been planted on Duriel by the Dark Eldar, the planet upon which the Hive-Fleet has concentrated most profoundly. Detonation of this device will collapse the planet’s core and take with it all the Tyranids burrowing within; it has been aptly nicknamed Fireheart. However, any deal made with a race as twisted and conniving as the Dark Eldar does not come without a catch. So, here unfolds the story of a fearless Farseer, the victim of a cruel trick, who today leads his cohort of loyal warriors to their deaths in a mission to manually detonate Fireheart.

We must extend our endless gratitude to the painters of both forces which will play out the final stages of the Battle of Duriel today. Siege Studios has again produced for SN an immensely characterful force which only looks increasingly better the more we look at it. And Keeran has created an equally impressive and exceptionally detailed army which rivals it. In this engagement, Steven hopes to prove the strength of the Tyranid list he will be taking to Heat 4, Keeran, bolstered by the weight of responsibility and duty he owes to his Craftworld, aims to stop him.

The Objective Marker

A moment of science falls over the battle field as the Eldar scanners pin point the location of the psychic device that could potentially end this world. The Genestealers pause their mindless roars, ticks and gnawing gestures in recognition of this moment. Both forces are now fully dedicated to securing this device. Scanners have, however, detected a psychic null field within the vicinity of Fireheart. Maintaining the necessary distance to secure control of it could make each force very vulnerable.

As has been discussed by the community the world over, the null field rule makes for a very different game. Because securing this objective requires a numerical advantage and the game does not end immediately if one side is tabled, some of the advantage which very elite armies, such as Imperial Knights, had over the rest has now been nipped in the bud, for this specific mission at least.
