A haphazard industrial sprawl towered over the bleak landscape spewing copious amounts of thick, oily smoke into the sky where it blotted out the sun in an ever-present polluted gloaming. The ramshackle nature of the complex gave the impression that a cyclopean fist had scooped up several mighty Adeptus Mechanicus manufactora only to hurl them with great force into the ground leaving a twisted mass of metal beyond all practical use. Yet the smoke and clamurous sound of industry betrayed the facilities operational status. The brave men of the Cadian 421st Shock Regiment advanced in open order towards their objective, heavy armour rumbling amidst their ranks, bayonets fixed and fingers tapping on trigger guards. It was the 38th day of the grand offensive that command had launched to drive the Orks into the acid sea and all signs pointed towards an Imperial victory. Casualties amongst the Astra Militarum were a mere 600,000 men lost, well within the Adeptus Munitorums projections and the 421st was advancing an incredible 12 miles a day, the mood amongst the Guardsmen was almost jovial, many joked they would be embarking on the next crusade within weeks though faced with the mountain of scrap that stood in their way many fell into grim silence. Despite the gains the Orks challenged the Imperium’s dominance of the sky, hundreds of fighta bombaz strafed and bombed the advancing regiments whilst dakka jets fought huge dog fights with Imperial thunderbolts and lightning interceptors. Such was the scale of the threat posed by the xenos airforces that the whole 421st had been retasked to capture or neutralise the main Ork airbase though in reality it had more in common with a forge fane of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Within the metal mountains twisted bowels hundreds of Meks fashioned warmachines of every conceivable type from the aforementioned aircraft to walkers, tanks, buggies and, most alarming of all, the initial assembly stages of several stompas. A sudden peal of thunder heralded the commencement of the Cadian preparatory bombardment. 200 earthshakers and medusas roared as one sending tons of ordnance arcing overhead to crash into the Mek fortress' flanks which was soon covered with dozens of fiery explosions. Huge sections of the complexes exterior began to collapse under the furious onslaught of the Astra Militarum’s artillery leaving gaping rents in its structure that spewed flames and smoke. The steady advance continued even as the Cadian armour lent its weight to the firestorm. The whine of overtaxed jet engines could be discerned as the Orks took to the skies to defend their base, dozens of crude yet effective flying machines rising quickly from the flames and making straight for the Cadian ranks. From the bowels of the factory sprawl came a wave of brutish walkers that clanked along almost comically on short pistoned legs and above it all a sound that drowned out even the volume of war, a cry given voice by thousands of alien throats;

"WAAAAGH!!"

The Watchmaster stamped his feet on the wooden slats across the trench floor, as he walked the line. It kept his blood moving, halting the cold bite of winter from sinking into his bones.

He silently observed his squad, as they prepared themselves for battle.  Soldiers of the Death Korps of Krieg didn’t need encouragement, or last minute reassurances. To die for the God-Emperor was a solemn duty, to atone for transgressions of the past.

The Watchmaster gazed skyward, gentle snowfall resting on the lenses of his rebreather-mask. The grey cloud covered sky began to mix with hues of dark green and black, as erratic arcs of green lightning traced across the sky. The enemy was here.

Peering over the trench, he could see the relentless march of the Necrons, they moved across the snow laden ground in unison. He could hear no battlecries, no chants of war, the Watchmaster observed his foe with the same readiness as the cold machines that he now faced. It mattered not who he fought.

War was death.

Death was atonement

With another busy day marked in the Studio's calendar, the SN Team set up a brand new snow-covered battlefield, a stark contrast to the current weather in Gibraltar. This new battle mat comes from StudioLevel, a wonderful company that specialise in creating scenic terrain and battlemats, made of the utmost best quality available to wargamers. If you feel like taking your battlefield decor to the next level, check out StudioLevel! Today's battle pits Pardo with the Studio Necrons, an army that he has had some success with in the past, against SN's Shaggy and the Death Korps of Krieg. Being an experienced Guard player, Shaggy looks to take the Death Korps to a solid victory in today's battle, whereas Pardo looks to honour the Sautekh Dynasty. Who will come out on top?

The Mechanicum proceeded to launch more of their landing ships, ready to drain the planet of it’s raw materials. From a nearby moon, nestled among a cluster of asteroids, Huron Blackheart, the Tyrant of Badab, watched from his ship, laying in wait with his Red Corsairs raiding fleet, like a pack of hungry predators.

Huron’s lighting claw flexed at the prospect of such rich plunder, he had no need for the raw materials yet to be mined from the planets surface, he wanted the Mechanicus themselves, whether as slaves, or spare parts, it mattered little…

The rooms electrical systems and servitors, infused with daemonic possession, began to writhe in fury, sparking and reaching out to find non-existent prey, Huron merely smirked. His Lord Discordant, Kuol Tevish had entered, his aura the cause of the mechanical upheaval within the room.

A loud distortion rang out as Kuol began to speak, the rooms apparatus fell silent.

“My daemonic engines hunger my lord” Huron didn’t reply, he remained fixated on the planet ahead.

Koul continued “Our supplies are low, we must…..”

“You will get your pickings from the iron bones of the mechanicum Kuol, pray to the Gods you use them wisely, or MY engines will hunger for more than parts…”

Koul bowed, knowing when not to push his masters temper.

As one, the Red Corsairs fleet came to life, as the pack began it’s hunt.

Never in a hundred battles had Brother Captain Montague come across a viler place than this. Plumes of sickly green smoke issued from craters in the ground, fumes so thick even his re-breathers had trouble filtering out the smell. Heaps of writhing, rotting flesh wriggled across the ground, finding other smaller pieces of rotting flesh and merging with them. The sound alone would be enough to drive a man to madness, let alone the sight of it.

This was an unholy, blasted place. A festering ground for Nurgle. The heartland of its country. And that was why he was here. With his retinue to support him him, Captain Montague had accepted the challenge of bringing the Emperor’s holy flame to cleanse this world. The Hammers of Titan would burn the rot all the way to its roots, not because they could not destroy it from orbit, but because to do so would risk spreading the infection to other systems.

And so, they had worked tirelessly, the Grey Knights spreading promethium flame on all they could find. Until they had gotten here. To this place. To the dark fortress at the heart of the heartland. They had expected Nurgle’s presence on this planet, but they had not expected to find a contingent of Death Guard here.

Not long after spotting the fortress did Montague’s company begin taking fire. Huge balls of molten rot flew through the air and struck the ground around him, blasting holes in his force. He sounded the charge, Strike Marines zipping out of reality and reappearing atop the fortress’ walls to hack at the Death Guard manning the ramparts.

This would be the last battle of his ongoing mission, the last push before the world could be cleansed in the God Emperor’s name. He would see it done, or he would perish in this place. For such was the way of the servants of Mankind.

"The World Eaters rampage had gone unchecked for weeks. Behind them, they left a planet ravaged, scoured, and lashed. Wounded, and bleeding, the world itself cried out in pain with every inch the Khorne’s devout followers claimed for themselves. Villages, cities, fortresses had all fallen, their defences overrun as much by the traitor legion’s infernal machines as by their chainaxes and bolters.

Relentless, brutal, vicious, the forces of Chaos led by Kharn the Betrayer had found no opposition they couldn’t overcome. No wall they couldn’t tear down. No enemy they hadn’t been able to cut to pieces and plant on spikes for the rest of the planet to see. Until they entered Site X7K.

At first, the mining colony looked like any other had. Huge, hulking, metal monstrosities punched giant holes into the earth. Black smoke billowed from their engines as their drills pushed deeper and deeper into the planet’s mantle. The entire site seemed automated when the World Eaters’ boots began moving across the complex’s steel gantries. There wasn’t a soul in sight, not a single body to rip open and deliver to Khorne.

The site was useless, for the World Eaters had no use for the minerals being drawn up from deep within the planet’s surface. They would burn it all, and perhaps in doing so placate their number, who were growing weary for lack of slaughter. When the first shot came and ripped clean through one of the World Eaters’ near-impenetrable power armour, chaos itself erupted.

No one had seen the shooter. Demons of Khorne howled, infernal engines roared, and chain-axes revved, but the World Eaters didn’t know where to strike.

Another traitor marine fell, then another, and another. It wasn’t until the first infernal machine exploded, sending pieces of itself in all directions and crumpling into a pile of twisted metal that the forces of Chaos spotted their foe. The Genestealer Cult’s ambush had been perfect. From the shadows these mutated creatures watched the enemy flail in all directions, desperate to find something to strike down. They chittered at each other, relaying target priorities, strategic opportunities, and vulnerable assets to exploit, but in the end, there was a single unified force driving them all.

The Hive Mind itself guided these misshapen monsters, and she would not let her lair be burned."Deployment: Dawn of WarMission: Vital IntelligencePoints: 1000

The last tank ruptured and exploded, sending a shockwave of sound throughout the battlefield powerful enough to silence it. The guardsman crawled on his stomach, clawing his way across the gantry not to escape the enemy, but to pick up his Lasrifle. Only a few more feet and he could start shooting again, start fighting again, not in the Emperor’s name, but in the name of the people who died around him today. Good people. Good soldiers who, when the dark unknown grew glowing green eyes and gnashing teeth, took up arms against it.

Another sound reached his ears. This time it wasn’t the thundering roar of cannon fire, but the howl of Bolter rounds as they flew over his head. Howling bolter rounds. Bullets possessed of Warpfire spat from the mouth of Bolters twisted by the warp itself. The thought was enough to make any man go insane, but not he. Not today.

Fingers stretching, he grabbed the back of his rifle, spun around, and searched for a target through the smoke and the haze. The air itself seemed to shimmer, to bend, to tremble. He swallowed hard, his mind anchored to the task at hand. There would be time to grieve later, when he joined his friends wherever they had gone. Right now, if he could only…

The sun reflected on armor made of blue and gold. It emerged through the smoke like a daemon, despite that which stood before him being a Space Marine. At least, it was once, many thousands of years ago. Already the guardsman could hear the whispers of daemons at his ears, clawing at the back of his mind, trying to get in. They were perhaps worse than the sight of the monster with the Boltgun, for at least it was a physical thing that could be shot at.

Steeling himself, the guardsman leveled his rifle. Roaring, he unloaded round after round of Lasrifle energy into the Space Marine, but his weapon wouldn’t bite into the beast’s armor. What was worse, when it did find a softer spot, it wasn’t blood that spilled from the gap—but dust.

So, it was true. They aren’t really men, only suits.

The Space Marine pulled his bolter up, and the guardsman found himself staring at the mouth of a dragon with Warpfire in its throat. The reaper was here, it was now his turn to enter the greatest unknown. He shut his eyes and breathed deeply. When the Boltgun spoke, his insides tensed like they’d been dipped in ice, but he was not dead.

He opened his eyes again, and watched the Space Marine fall to his knees, then slam to the ground with a hard thud. Behind the hulk stood not a man, but a woman clad in black armor. Her hair was as white as snow, her skin was fair, but her expression was hard; she had a soldier’s eyes. In one hand she held a bolt pistol, the muzzle still smoking. In the other, a power sword crackling with light.

“Get up, soldier,” she said, “The Saint is here. You are not dying today.”

With the studio poised for yet another battle report, the SN Team set up the battlefield appropriately, with Pardo taking the lead at preparing what is his favourite set of terrain at the Studio. Today's game will see SN Nick with the fresh Studio Thousand Sons facing up against a long time friend and rival, Mark, who will be using his Adepta Sororitas, coming back with a bigger and better list than the one he sported in previous reports. This is sure to be an interesting game, as we have yet to see the new Sisters in action!

Warhorns blared across the blasted land, shaking the very earth loose. Titanic feet thundered, cracking the ground beneath them. There was no need for subtlety here, for the enemy knew of their approach. No. The Castellan in command of the Knights force wanted instead to intimidate, to strike fear into the hearts of his foe.

It did not matter to him that his foe had no heart. That his foe had only metal where there should have been flesh. That his foe could not be shaken in this way. This was how battles had been fought for millennia. First you sound the drums of war, then you dance to the beat with Stubbers and Battle Cannons.

Across from the monstrous, lumbering line of Imperial Knights—their target—stood a dark monument crackling with green energy. A Monolith to the ancient enemy, the Necrons. The sky above the edifice was dark and sinister, black clouds swirling around a beam of light shooting into the heavens.

Beneath the Monolith, a legion of undead, mechanical warriors stood stoically against the march of the Imperial Knights. Thunder grumbled overhead. Arcs of lightning flashed, illuminating their metallic armour in ethereal shades of green. These warriors did not move. They did not flinch. They did not balk at the advancing Imperial forces. Instead they waited, standing as still as statues, their eyes hollow and dead.

Until the Overlord began to move.

His steps were slow, deliberate. He moved to the frontlines, a tattered cloak billowing behind him. His eyes burned with fiery, green light; defiant against the war machines encroaching on his domain. Slowly he raised the orb held in his hand, and he stared into its dark surface. By his will, the orb sparked to life, green whips of energy rippling out from inside.

Once again, he looked to the Knights, all the while slowly raising the orb in his hand. Behind him, a sea of dark eyes suddenly shone bright green, and the warriors in perfect synchronicity leveled their weapons as, around them, from underground, more mechanical constructs begun to rise.

SN Battle Reports would like to welcome you, the reader, to another battle, which is shaping up to be an incredible read. Duking it out on the battlefield today are two SN generals; Julian, who will be using the Imperial Knights, and Chris with a very strong Necron force. As always, it is exciting to see the Imperial Knights in action at the Studio, as well as the Necrons. To top it all off, the battle will take place in an ancient Necron city, the primeval setting riddled with monolithic structures and tombs, reserved for their mightiest heroes and warriors. This has now become my personal favourite battlemat and terrain setup, as it all ties in perfectly with both the army, and the narrative!
Invading the ancient city, a warband of Imperial Knights lead by a Knight Valiant begin their first steps onto unknown territory. A Knight Errant deploys centrally, flanked by two Armiger Warglaives, the smaller and nimbler of the Knights looking to establish a forward perimeter early on in the battle, giving the larger and bulkier Knights the time necessary to move closer to their targets.

Even through his re-breather, the Brother Sergeant of the Raptors forces could smell Nurgle’s putrid stench. He stalked slowly through the ruined city, his bolter held in a firm grip. Around him, ashes fell, dusting his ceramite armor. All was quiet and still. Peaceful. One of the many sounds of death.

Beneath his heel he crushed something that crumbled like it was made of wet clay. Turning his eyes down, he saw only a mess of blood and puss and tissue that may have once been a skull. The space marine scowled and faced his brothers.

“Burn it,” he said. “Burn it all.”

At once, his men carried out his orders. Flamers ignited, birthing fires of holy flame to burn away the stench of this place in the Emperor’s name. Where the fires poured, the darkness and the snow receded. Until it didn’t.

All at once, a deathly music erupted around the Primaris marines. The fire screamed in a way it shouldn’t, the darkness roared blasphemies cursing the God Emperor and all his children. When the first bolter round rang through the hollowed-out structure and struck the brother sergeant in the shoulder, he raised his weapon in return and fired wildly into the flames for he could not see the enemy.

Bolters sang their songs of pain and death, joined swiftly by the hum of molten plasma and a cacophony of nightmarish howls. The blaze of light disrupted the Primaris’ HUDs, making it almost impossible to acquire targets just long enough that a hulking, monstrous Death Shroud Terminator could close in before being spotted.

He was clad all in white, his body was a pillar of flesh, muscle, and armor infused by the corrupting power of contagion itself. No amount of bolter fire or purifying flames could make the Terminator’s aim falter. With one swift swipe, he cut the brother sergeant in half… and thus the first had fallen in a battle that would be as swift as it was bloody.

As we close in on yet another hot summer on the Rock, the SN Team prepare the Studio for yet another battle report. In today's report, the repugnant Death Guard take on the might of the Raptors Chapter. As usual, Pardo will be playing his Raptors list, which he has changed around slightly since it was last seen in order for him to try out some more units. Shaggy will be piloting the Death Guard, a force which he has grown to love since he first used it at the Studio. Today's mission will be the Beachhead mission from Chapter Approved 2018, using the Search and Destroy Deployment.

Addendum: Sealed by The Most Holy Ordos of His Inquisition. Cited for deletion.

The following is an abstract of a report collated by Inquisitor [REDACTED] ref. suspected Heretic Astartes activity in the Luminar Sector at the coreward extreme of Segmentum Solar. The Luminar Sector plays host to the Kronus Rapids, a series of warp storms that have remained astrocartographically constant throughout the history of the Imperium but which also exhibit extreme temporal displacement in adjacent space. It is not uncommon for ships to crash out of warp space centuries after they were declared missing or even centuries in advance of the voyage being embarked (cross ref: [REDACTED]) in this region. Such was the notoriety of the Rapids effects that some more foolhardy ship masters tried to harness the time displacement to cut years off their journey times with often tragic results.
At the dawn of M42, as the opening of the Great Rift heralded an unprecedented increase in warp activity, the Kronus Rapids would become the stage for a highly curious and worrying action. Astropathic communication bearing archaic authentication hymnals and unequivicably false time stamps started being recieved throughout the Luminar Sector. Those few with the authorisation to recognise these coded identification rituals gasped in horror and sent urgent calls for aid and it was only due to the unnaturally high number of Inquisitors belonging to the Ordo Chronus stationed throughout the sector to combat the ill effects of the Rapids that the Astropathic messages were recognised at all. The Ordo Chronus specialises in mitigating the ill effects of warp related time travel and were therefore blessed with some of the most complete records outside of the data stacks of Holy Terra itself. In this treasure trove of ancient data lay a precise match for the unique identifiers presented by the obsolete astropathic communiques and that match prompted the pleas for aid. The signals belonged to the 346th expeditionary fleet of the Emperors Great Crusade! A force amounting to no less than 1 battalion of the XII Legion (World Eaters), 2 regiments of Artemezian Voltgiers, 3 grand cruisers and 12 escorts. A formidable assemblage of martial might capable of wreaking terrible slaughter uncomfortably close to the throneworld. That the 346th Expeditionary Fleet had been declared lost almost a decade before the events of Istvaan III or that the content of the Astropathic messages seemed to indicate that this force 10 millennia removed from their own time were still loyal and merely requesting aid from an Imperium that they still served mattered little it seems. Their sires and kins betrayal so long ago marked them for death by those they called on as friends.
Barely 2 weeks after the first astropathic messages had been recieved the Imperiums response arrived in the Luminar Sector. A trio of golden prowed War Galeasses bearing the aquilla and lightning bolt sigil of the Emeperor Himself and heralded by astropathic identification signals bearing the seal of no less personage than the Captain General of the Adeptus Custodes himself. How such a force had managed to make the voyage from Terra at such speed (Luminar lays three months warp travel from Terra) was highly speculated though many pointed to the ancient and highly advanced technologies evident in their magisterial vessels designs and in the Custodes pool of peerless Navigators, the best scions of the Navis Nobilite drafted to serve the throne. The golden trio of War Galeasses made best speed to the planetoid where the astropathic signals originated, the picket of navy frigates that had isolated and observed the 346th expeditionary fleet since its arrival gave way before the new arrivals undeniable authority. The 346th's once formidable void fleet lay scattered and in ruins in a path leading from the systems manderville point to the 2nd planetoid orbiting the local star. It was clear that beyond the extreme temporal displacement the warp had wreaked terrible damage on the fleets ships and killed most of its human compliment. The World Eaters themselves had descended to the planetoids surface to await the aid of their Imperium though what the Custodes brought was fire and death.

Here follows a detailed account of the action that followed:

As the weather begins to heat up on the Rock so does the Warhammer fever at the studio. With the Gibraltar GT behind us, the SN Team are looking towards the summer and a few small local tournaments. In today's report Pardo, commanding the studio Custodes, and Kevin, bringing his amazing old-school World Eaters back onto the field, take a step back to Chapter Approved 2017. The mission will be Scorched Earth. To refresh your memories, in this mission a player scores a victory point if they control an objective at the end of a turn, additionally they may choose to raze an objective in their enemy's deployment zone for D3 points, after which point it is removed. Deployment will be Search and Destroy. To represent the churned and war beaten battlefield which is only appropriate for this clash, the Team bring out the Studio's brand new city terrain over a battlemat which truly depicts an earth scorched by the sinews of war.
"Where's Waaaghly" Our little feature in our Battle Reports where we cleverly hide our Ork mascot Waaaghly, in one of the photos in every report! Will you be able to find him?
