Ultramarines vs Death Guard

The battlefield was a forest of flames. Spires of thick, black smoke rose into the air in hellish columns from the broken hulks of destroyed tanks. Through the haze and the noxious fumes at ground level, sporadic pockets of light erupted. Bolter fire. Someone was alive in there, still fighting, still breathing—somehow.

There, deep in the heart of all that smoke, where the air was thickest and darkest, where a single breath could kill a man four times over, stood Brother Sergeant Crassos. His armour had been battered and broken. Red lights flashed all across his HUD, indicating not only that his re-breather was on the verge of imminent and catastrophic failure, but that he was dangerously low on ammunition.

His squad had perished, his battalion, too. He was all that was left of Strike Force Gamma; the last Ultramarine left, but he was not alone. There were shapes in the shadows. Twisting, writhing shapes, watching him, taunting him. Whenever one appeared, Crassos would level his bolt rifle and hesitate before firing. His bullets were precious, his armour was failing, but he had his faith in the Emperor, and faith in himself.

“As long as I draw breath,” he yelled, “You will not lay claim to this place, treacherous scum.”

“That, brother, can be arranged,” came a gurgling voice from within the smoke.

Perhaps his ocular displays had started failing, but Crassos thought the flames licking at the edges of his power armour were starting to turn a noxious, vile green. He leveled his bolt rifle, checking the readout one more time. Six bullets were all that remained. Five more than he would need to kill the speaker.

A shape emerged from the smoke. Not a shadow, this time, but a hulking figure clad in white. As the smoke rolled off this newcomer’s body, Crassos could see not only the markings on his power armour, but also the writhing tendrils and baubles bursting from it. All Chaos was abominable, but the Death Guard were the foulest of all. Though his rebreather had not failed yet, he could already smell the traitor despite the fire and the smoke.

“In the Emperor’s holy name,” Crassos roared, “Die by my hands!”

His bolt rifle roared with him, and a bullet exploded against the Death Guard’s chest, shattering the ceramite and forcing the traitor to stop his slow advance. The hit was true, the bolt had tasted flesh, but the traitor had not perished. Worse, more shapes had started to emerge from the smoke behind him—a legion of Death Guard seemingly unhurt despite the bloody conflict. One of them levelled a plasma gun, the weapon glowing ominously within the haze.

A garbled voice message suddenly touched his ears, though he could barely hear it over the sound of his own thundering heart. Perhaps this was Chaos trickery at work, perhaps he was hearing what they wanted him to hear, or perhaps the message was true.

“Strike Force Gamma, do you read? This is Battle Barge Octavius. Brothers, stand your ground and prepare to receive the Lord of Macragge. Help is on the way.”

With cold stormy weather looming over the rock, the SN Team seek the refuge of the Studio, where they prepare themselves for yet another action-packed battle report. With SN member Shaggy present, he decides to test out a new army of his, a Primaris Ultramarines army! This is an ongoing project taken on by Benji of Standfast Studios, a local painter who’s arrived on the rock. With Shaggy issuing the challenge, Pardo swiftly accepts it, choosing the Death Guard, as some newly painted units had arrived for them. Due to the size of Shaggy’s current force, the players choose to make this a 900 point game, allowing Shaggy to get to grips with his forces. They choose the Dawn of War deployment, as well as the Narrow the Search mission, one which sees both factions fighting for a lone objective within the centre of the battlefield, with the control zone starting out at 18″ from the centre of the battlefield, which shrinks by 3″ each turn as the battle progresses. The army with more models within range of the objective secures a Victory Point at the end of the battle round, with the usual secondary conditions; Slay the Warlord, First Strike and Linebreaker also being in effect. Shaggy loses the first roll off of the game, with Pardo Deploying second. This in turn means that Shaggy will get go first!
